X-Men: Apocalypse trailer

Fox has released the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, and after all the timeline-jumping of X-Men: Days of Future Past, it’s refreshing to have a good, old-fashioned prequel. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) have traded the chess games, for now, to play as pawns to a larger power: Apocalypse, a.k.a. En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac), who has chosen four mutants to imbue with powers—making them his Four Horsemen of the… well, you get it. And since this is set in the 1980s, we get young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Scott Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp)!

Of course, the major players from past movies have also returned: Quicksilver (Evan Peters), which means more awesome slo-mo sequences; Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), interestingly not referring to herself as Mystique at the moment while she seems to be on Charles’ side; and Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne)! Here’s the official synopsis from the studio:

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto, to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

But just as alliances are shifting, let’s not forget the shots of Professor X seemingly under En Sabah Nur’s control! Also, is it Apocalypse who takes away all his hair…?

X-Men: Apocalypse comes to theaters May 27, 2016.

Seeing Jennifer Lawrence really dragged me out of it.  All I could think every time she was on screen (except the first which I could give them since it looked like it might be a public place) was “Well, I guess she’s too famous to want to wear the makeup anymore.”  Especially when she was in an X-Men costume, but still looked like J.Law.

I love how this trailer is all DOOOOOOOM and then there’s that one shot of Jubilee and you’re like, “Yeahhhhh you’re not going to be useful here.”

I had already seen the trailer, but was it necessary to spoil the final shot in the first image of this article?

Sansa Grey is going to take some time to get used to, but the trailer looks pretty good. And that last shot is superb.

#1 Apocolypse: hate how he looks

#2 Jennifer Lawrence is only in this because she is popular now. Wish it wasn’t so.

#3: Bald! He looks pretty good.

Sure to offend someone, when a poorly-designed, cheesy-looking character compares himself to something out of both Old and New Testament prophecy.

I’ll wait for this turkey to hit the public library…

I watched this on the same day I watched the ID3 trailer, and while the X-Men movies in general have a lot of problems if you look at them too closely, and yeah, the whole ‘Biblical/religious figures are actually mutants/aliens’ etc thing is a bit overdone – this looks fun.  I always find the X-Men movies to be rather fun romps, and I also appreciate that they actually seem to have color.  This trailer also showed when we saw SW:TFA and compared to Dawn of Justice and Civil War, it didn’t look quite as depressing (and again, had an actual color palette that wasn’t all washed out).

ETA: Also, I loved Nightcrawler in the previous movies so I am super excited to see him again here. I giggled a bit at seeing Jubilee.  Agreed with wanting to see Gambit again! I wasn’t really happy with how he was portrayed in the Wolverine movie, and he was one of my favorites from the cartoon series.

I love that we’ll get Nightcrawler again, he’s my favorite X-Man.
